About the event

Since antiquity to the 18th and 19th centuries to now, crowns made of flowers and foliage have been a beautiful way to accentuate fashion in many different cultures around the world.  Learn to make your own in this all-day class to be held in the beautiful showroom of the last remaining fabric flower factory in New York City, M&S Schmalberg. Family-owned since 1916, they are truly a treasure and we are exceptionally lucky to have the chance to meet with the owner, Adam Brand, who will offer us a private tour of the factory so we can see how their exquisite couture flowers are made.

We will make wire frames to your head size, decorated with beautiful millinery flowers, leaves, and fruit of your choice. Students should expect to spend $50-100 on flowers, leaves and fruit of their choosing during the class to complete their project, and are welcome to shop for additional flowers as well. All other materials needed for the workshop are included in the class fee. You are welcome to bring your own materials (except flowers) and supplementary supplies.

Outside of a basic sewing kit (needles, scissors, thimble), all of the necessary tools will be available for your use during class.  However, if you would like to bring your own head form for use during class and later at home, you can get a discount on your first order with my favorite block maker, Guy Morse Brown Hat Blocks, by mentioning that I referred you. I recommend either a dolly head or a utility block in balsa wood, plus a block spinner.

Class hours: 9am-4pm, with a break for lunch

Space is limited to 6 students

Sewing level: Beginner to Advanced
